Who needs Benoit Blanc and his weird donut analogies when you can throw a bunch of comedians in a room and play murder mystery? Reuniting with old friends can make for all sorts of surprising adventures, as the characters of “The Afterparty” quickly learn in the trailer. The eight-episode series revolves around a group of old friends who reunite at a high school reunion afterparty when they are shaken up by Haddish’s Detective Danner. There is a body and an important question: who is the killer?
“How did this all go so wrong?” Sam Richardson’s Aniq wonders aloud, not long after being charged with murder. Given the close quarters, there’s likely a lot more to look forward to before the night’s events become apparent. Each episode brings us a little closer to the answers and relives the night from a different character’s perspective. For added enjoyment, each episode has its own unique visual format and genre to match the narrator’s personality. Get ready for some experimentation and lots of laughs to go with it.
Yes, there has been a murder and that is serious business, but make no mistake, “The Afterparty” is really a comedy. Just look at the cast: Tiffany Haddish makes for a hilarious detective alongside a number of other comedic masterminds such as Richardson, Ben Schwartz, Ilana Grazer, Ike Barinholtz, John Early, Jamie Demetriou, Dave Franco and Zoë Chao.
The series also comes from the endlessly creative minds of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who have consistently proven their penchant for turning the craziest concepts into something big. That’s right, these are the minds behind the actually funny sequel to “21 Jump Street,” the movie made entirely out of Lego, and the obvious best Spider-Man movie, “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse” . The pair are executive producers on the series, with Miller acting as showrunner, writer and director.
Here’s how Apple TV+ described the series:
“The Afterparty” is a murder mystery comedy set at a high school reunion afterparty. Each of the eight episodes will feature a same night retelling, told from a different character’s perspective, each with its own unique visual format and film genre to suit the narrator’s personality.
