Alexander McQueen Announces Education Initiative in East London

Alexander McQueen will financially and creatively support A Team Arts Education, a community organization based in London’s Tower Hamlets dedicated to encouraging young people to get involved in the arts

Alexander McQueen has long been a supporter of the creative arts and the young talent it nurtures and generates. The British label has taken several schemes and initiatives to support those with a creative flair. The top floor of the Smiljan Radic-designed boutique in London’s Mayfair serves as an exhibition space-cum-workshop, where students and fashion fans alike take in the brand’s final designs, toiles and samples.

In 2019, the house also began donating excess fabric, from women’s taffeta to menswear, to more than 20 institutions and community fashion education projects across the UK, giving aspiring designers the opportunity to dive into an archive of luxurious, artisan-crafted fabrics . British menswear prodigy SS Daley received these donations; his upcycled, whimsical approach to design has earned him a legion of A-list fans.

Now Alexander McQueen has announced his support for A Team Arts Education, a community organization based in Tower Hamlets in London’s East End – where brand founder Lee McQueen grew up – that encourages young people to take up the arts. Many schools in Tower Hamlets have scrapped arts-oriented curriculum options in favor of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) subjects. Team Arts Education works to foster creative engagement on topics that may no longer be available in school – working Saturdays and holidays – among one of the fastest growing, youngest and most diverse populations in the UK.

“At a time when schools and local authorities are reducing their arts budgets and provisions, we still need the arts to make a positive recovery and come together after the Covid-19 pandemic. Working with Alexander McQueen will bring inspiration, hope and opportunity to an area linked to the fashion and textile industries now hidden by layers of history and a changing urban landscape. The partnership will help the arts thrive in a positive way for young people and the wider East London community,” said Sarbjit Natt, director of A Team Arts Education.

Until 2022, Alexander McQueen will not only financially support A Team Arts Education, but will also offer a series of workshops and classes, which it piloted in 2020. These include live experiences with the fashion brand’s design, textile and embroidery teams, structured as part of ‘The Explore Programme’ in A Team Arts Education’s fashion, textiles and art and design pathways.
