I’m not sure people understand the level of rave reviews Netflix’s new original series, Arcane, is getting from viewers. The animated League of Legends series from Riot Games and Fortiche Productions is sneaking into Netflix’s top 10, but I’m following viewers’ reactions to it, and it’s like nothing I’ve ever seen from the service before.
While critical reviews of Arcane have been a bit slow coming in (though with a dozen registered, it has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes), viewers have been more forceful with their ratings for even just the first three episodes of the series, as it’s released in batches throughout a period of three weeks.
Arcane has a 98% viewership rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but what really caught my eye was its 9.4/10 rating on IMDB.
To put that into context, as it stands now, that’s the highest-rated Netflix original series… ever. Even if the score drops over time as more reviews come in, it still has a long way to go to lose that spot.
Here’s the list of Netflix series and miniseries that rank nearly as highly right now:
- Arcane – 9.4
- The Last Dance – 9.1
- When They See Us – 8.9″
- Black mirror – 8.8″
- Narcos – 8.8
- Stranger Things – 8.7
- BoJack Rider – 8.7
- House of Cards – 8.7
- Anne with an E – 8.7
- The Haunting of Hill House – 8.6
Even a breakout series loved by gamers and regular viewers alike, The Witcher has an audience rating of 91% and an IMDB rating of 8.2.
But wait, there’s more! Being rated so highly, Arcane is in the all the time IMDB top 250 of shows, at the very top. Again, there are only 10,000 reviews while other shows have 100,000 to 1 million, but it’s impressive nonetheless. These are the top scoring compatriots of all time:
- Planet Earth II – 9.5
- Planet Earth – 9.4
- Breaking Bad – 9.4
- Band of Brothers – 9.4
- Chernobyl – 9.3
- The Wire – 9.3″
- Blue Planet II – 9.3
- Our planet – 9.2
- Cosmos – 9.2
- Avatar: The Last Airbender – 9.2
Again, I expect this score to drop a bit, but it’s impossible to underestimate how well received this series has been. Right now it may be flying under the radar as an animated video game adaptation, which may be limiting audiences, but as word of mouth spreads I think this will go viral. And to answer a common question, no, you don’t need to know anything about League of Legends as a video game to enjoy it, and a lot of people who watch it I’ve heard didn’t even know it was based on a game not at all.
No, I don’t expect Arcane to stay in the top 5 rated series of all time, nor do I expect Squid Game to reach ratings. But this is a huge success for Netflix like we’ve never seen in a few different ways, and you’ll both want to check it out and keep an eye on its progress as the news starts to spread about it.
