Aryan Khan was arrested Saturday night after police raided a ship off the coast of Mumbai and found narcotics, local media said. The court has taken Khan and two others into custody at the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), the federal agency investigating the case.
A spokesman for Shah Rukh Khan did not respond to requests for comment. Calls to the NCB went unanswered outside regular office hours.
“They have been charged with consumption, but there is no evidence of that,” Advait Tamhankar, a lawyer who appeared before one of the other two accused, said outside the courtroom.
Television cameras showed a bunch of reporters and police around Aryan Khan as he was taken into a vehicle at the end of the hearing. He is due to appear in court again on October 7.
Many high-profile Indian actors and TV personalities have come under scrutiny from narcotics officials since last year. In September 2020, several top female actors were questioned by the NCB, although it was unclear how the investigation progressed.
Some Bollywood personalities have defended Aryan Khan and criticized the media surrounding his arrest.
“The slightest offense threatens to be exaggerated,” film producer Pritish Nandy said on Twitter on Sunday. ‘Children make mistakes. Punish him especially if the tests confirm his guilt. But let’s not crucify him in the media.’
