Barcelona follows Cesar Azpilicueta’s contract situation at Chelsea

Barcelona are keeping an eye on defender Cesar Azpilicueta’s contract situation as he enters the final six months of his deal with Chelsea, sources have told ESPN.

Barcelona transferred Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia for free last summer and sources have said the club will continue to target players who are out of contract due to the financial situation.

Azpilicueta, 32, has made 12 appearances for Chelsea this season and remains a fixture under coach Thomas Tuchel after captaining the Champions League success last season.

However, with his deal next summer, the Spain international has yet to commit to new terms at Stamford Bridge, which has warned Barca, who have also shown interest in the defender in the past.

Sources have told ESPN that Chelsea remains in negotiations with Azpilicueta and hopes he will extend, but there is no deal yet for him to extend his London stay.

If Azpilicueta chooses to end his contract with Chelsea, new Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez would be particularly keen to sign him.

Sources have told ESPN that Xavi values his ability to play as a right-back in a four-man defense or right of a back three. He even occasionally played as a central defender in a back-four for Spain.

Azpilicueta would also add leadership and experience to a youthful backline with Sergino Dest (21), Eric Garcia (20), Oscar Mingueza (22) and Ronald Araujo (22).

Barca signed Dani Alves last week for that reason, although the Brazilian won’t be able to play until January, when the transfer window opens.

38-year-old Alves has a contract until the end of the season, initially after his departure from Sao Paulo in September.

Azpilicueta, who previously played for Osasuna and Marseille, has been playing at Chelsea since 2012. He has made over 400 appearances for the Premier League squad and recently returned to the Spanish team under Luis Enrique.

He made 36 appearances for his country, 11 of them in 2021 after a three-year absence from international football.
