Bayern Munich vs Gladbach: Lineups, team news, making a starting XF out of this mess, and more! (updated)

So match day is almost upon us and we are still not sure if Bayern Munich vs Borussia Mönchengladbach will go ahead as planned. TEN Bayern players have tested positive for the virus, including Alphonso Davies who actually trained with the team yesterday, so you can assume a majority of the squad is in danger. However, the current attitude towards the pandemic seems to be “the show must go on”, so here we are talking about a crazy situation.

Team news

At the moment, the situation is so fluid that it is impossible to say who will or will not play. For now, we can only guess what the lineup will look like. Given what we know so far, here’s an option with all the available first XI players:

As you can see it’s akin to a 3-5-2 and nothing beats a formation we’ve ever seen Bayern Munich play before. Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller are the XI’s main hopes – they will be the ones trying to score goals. If they get serve, these two WILL score. It’s the job of the rest of the team to get it to them.

Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry are quite good defensively, so Nagelsmann could be forced to use them at fullback. Marcel Sabitzer, Malik Tillman and Marc Roca will have to form a duo for three midfielders, while Niklas Sule, Joshua Kimmich and Benjamin Pavard are the sole remaining defenders from the entire team. Sven Ulriech gets his second appearance in place of Manuel Neuer, with the Bayern captain for the moment after a positive test.

That… is not a great XI. It’s not even a smart XI as it uses pretty much everyone currently available.

Currently, there are some reports that Omar Richards and Corentin Tolisso could be released from quarantine today, while Kingsley Coman may come back tomorrow with a negative test. They haven’t trained much, but in that case, all three would be great candidates for the base. Richards’ return would be particularly significant as the lineup currently has no natural left-backs.

Of course, other developments may also take place. We will keep you informed. Check back here on BFW from time to time to see if there are any updates. All the news about the game is right here where you need it.
