Former Chelsea and Inter Milan manager Antonio Conte reportedly turned down the opportunity to become Newcastle United manager after the Magpies took office.
After a Saudi-backed consortium ended Mike Ashley’s 14-year stint at the St James’ Park office, the new Newcastle owners are being proposed to replace Steve Bruce as manager in the coming months.
Conte has been out of the game since leaving Inter at the end of his title-winning campaign last season, and the Italian was originally reported as the favorite to take over in the Northeast.
However, The Sun claims that Conte would turn down the opportunity to take over if the job were available, and the 52-year-old is eager for his next club to be a title challenge already.
The report adds that Conte is not interested in joining the long-term project in Newcastle, but his head could change if the Magpies’ silver ambitions are realized in the next few years.
Conte has won the Premier League, the FA Cup and four Serie A titles during his coaching career, while Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard have also been linked to the Newcastle job.
