Death Stranding Director’s Cut is coming to PC this spring

Following a PlayStation debut in September, Death Stranding Director’s Cut is now confirmed on its way to PC this spring. The expanded version of Kojima Production’s stumbling simulator spills in new objects, missions and oddities, ranging from a robot you can drive to a racetrack. It will also be one of the few games that supports Intel’s new XeSS upscaling fantasy.

More than rebuilding or reworking the game, Director’s Cut mostly adds a lot of new stuff. It has some handy features, such as a new route guide that can suggest several different trails with different difficulties, for people who want help resisting their urge to march in a straight line toward their goal, terrain be damned. But for the most part, it’s something new like a long-range ‘maser’ stunggun, a shooting range to practice violence, a cargo catapult to fire packs, a booster pack that can slow down Sam’s fall, and a racetrack to zoom around . It also adds Buddy Bot (another BB, to Katharine’s delight), who can run around carrying packages for you, or even carry you. Plus other bits and pieces.

Hideo Kojima himself has objected to The Man using the label ‘director’s cut’.

“A director’s clip in a movie is an additional edit to an abbreviated version that was either reluctantly released because the director did not have the right to edit it or because the playing time had to be shortened,” he tweeted after the PlayStation announcement.

“In the game, it’s not what was cut, but what was produced further that was involved. Delector’s Plus? So in my opinion, I do not like to call ‘director’s cut’.”

The PC version will also support Intel’s new Xe Super Sampling technology. It’s an idea similar to Nvidia’s DLSS or AMD’s FSR, by using fancy upscaling to increase performance by processing a game with a lower screen resolution and then processing it so that it looks nice in high resolution. In theory, it can offer performance gains with a small loss in image quality.

Death Stranding Delector’s Plus is coming to PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store simultaneously in the spring of 2022. Depending on how they count seasons, it could be as late as mid-June.

On PlayStation, people who owned the original could get Delector’s Plus at a great discount. I’ve asked PC publishers 505 Games if the plan is the same here, but haven’t heard back yet. I’ll let you know if I do. You certainly hope they will offer it cheaply.

Correction: This post originally said things about FSR and XeSS that were wrong and frankly just exhausting.
