Evangeline Lilly had to bleach her hair ‘every 10 days’ to make it look natural blonde for film role: ‘It fell out by the end of the shoot’

Evangeline Lilly opened up during an interview with People about the effort she had to go to to make her hair look blonde in the movie South of Heaven.

The actress, 42, said she had to dye her hair every 10 days to make her look natural blonde, rather than platinum blonde.

“I was bleaching my hair every 10 days and by the end of the shoot it was falling out,” said the Ant-Man star.

Lilly said she and South of Heaven director Aharon Keshales both wanted her character to look like “sun and the source of life” in the film.

“I chose her to have the naturally blonde hair and a kind of warmer complexion so she would look radiant, healthy, vibrant and full of life,” the Lost star said.

“But that maintenance became very difficult because I wanted her to look like a natural blonde.”

She also faced the challenge of cutting her hair very short before the movie started filming, a decision she made for fun and not for the character.

‘[My hair] was as short as it grew a millimeter, you could see it,’ said the star. “I bleached my hair every 10 days and it fell out by the end of the shoot.”

While some fans have speculated that she originally cut her for this role, Lilly revealed she was doing it “just for fun.”

“When it came time to play this part, I didn’t really know if I should do anything to change my appearance, because I already had a shaved head!” said the actress.

However, Jimmy is pulled back into the seedy underbelly of the town he lives in when he tries to earn some extra cash to give Annie the best year of her life.

Sudeikis and Lilly star alongside Shea Whigam of Boardwalk Empire fame and Luke Cage star Mike Colter in the film.
