  • George Clooney said his family is a motivating factor for his activist work.

  • The actor was featured on Monday in the podcast “WTF with Marc Maron”.

  • He said he would be “humiliated” if his children questioned him about his non-involvement in the future.

George Clooney is a father who wants a legacy rooted in activism — and a legacy that will make his children proud.

The Academy Award winner appeared on Monday’s episode of the podcast “WTF with Marc Maron,” where Moran asked Clooney about his role as an activist.

Clooney discussed how growing up as a child in the 1960s and early 1970s gave various reasons, such as the women’s rights movement and the civil rights movement, to be actively involved “as my parents were,” he said.

“My father’s only mantra was to always challenge anyone with power and always defend anyone without power,” he said. “And if you do that in life, you win.”

Clooney, who shares 4-year-old twins Ella and Alexander with his wife, Amal Clooney, also attributes his activism to his children and how they look back on this time in history.

“I’d be so embarrassed if my kids 20 years from now would look back at this point in time and say, ‘You thought this was okay and you didn’t get up to say anything?'” Clooney said. “That would humiliate me.”

The “Tender Bar” director previously talked about how getting involved in activism was something his parents taught during an interview for his position in People magazine’s 2020 “Person of the Year” issue.

“You had to be involved,” Clooney told People of his early life. “My mom and dad were involved, and we were” [taught] it’s your civic duty… I remember my father saying, ‘Don’t come back and look me in the eye unless you get up [bullies and racists].’ I’m glad I was raised that way.”

The actor’s marriage shares the same values. Amal Clooney is an international human rights lawyer. Together, the couple founded the Clooney Foundation for Justice, which fights for justice against human rights abuses around the world.
