Head coach Igor Stimac names 23-man roster

NEW DELHI: India’s senior men’s national team head coach Igor Stimac has appointed a roster of 23 players for the upcoming SAFF Championship which starts in the Maldives from October 1 onwards. The championship final is scheduled for October 16.

Players and support staff will meet in Bengaluru tomorrow (Monday, September 27) and fly to the Maldives the next day. Stimac and other members of the technical staff will join the team directly in the Maldives on the same day.

Besides India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the hosts Maldives are the other teams in the Championship. Each team faces once with the first two classified for the final.

Head coach Igor Stimac stated: “We are all looking forward to the SAFF Championship as the leading soccer country in this part of Asia. These 4-5 matches are extremely crucial for us as we will have no other chance to get together before the start of the AFC Asian Cup third qualifying round next season. So these games should help us improve some points in our game. “

The Blue Tigers have won the SAFF Championship (previously SAARC Cup) 7 times – 1993 in Lahore, 1997 in Kathmandu, 1999 in Margao, 2005 in Karachi, 2009 (U23 team) in Dhaka, 2011 in New Delhi), 2015- 16 at Thiruvananthapuram.

India begins its campaign against Bangladesh on October 4.

October 10: Nepal vs India (IST 8.30pm).

October 13: India vs Maldives (IST 8.30pm).
