Heard outside the Michigan locker room: Wolverines embrace new mindset

ANN ARBOR – The Michigan soccer team sent Indiana on Saturday night with a 29-7 win at Michigan Stadium to improve to 8-1.

Here are notable quotes from head coach Jim Harbaugh and Michigan players after the win.

“We preached that all week because what happened last week (to) the state of Michigan is clearly out of our control. But going forward, we said that no matter what happens, someone has to pay for it (loss to MSU), and it happened to be Indiana. That was our mentality this week. We’ll probably keep it up for the rest of the year.”

– Outside linebacker David Ojabo on the team’s “someone has to pay” mantra after it lost to the Spartans last week.

“We’ll see. Talked to him for a bit after the game. I don’t think it’s serious. I don’t know if it’s mild, but it’s somehow less than serious. We’ll see.”

— Harbaugh on sophomore turning back Blake Corum’s status. He left the game in the first quarter with an injury after his only carry of the game.

“I think it’s a testament to our brotherhood, even to the coaches. Just trust, man. The way we practice, we know everyone is ready. Everyone is taking game-like reps in practice, so if someone goes to goes down, you know the next man is ready. We’re not worried, we’re not backing down.”

– Ojabo in the team that overcomes multiple injuries on Saturday. Along with Corum, cornerback Gemon Green and receivers Andrel Anthony and AJ Henning also came out injured. Quarterback Cade McNamara also missed several plays while being assessed for injury.

“I thought the pressure on their quarterback was a huge factor. Aidan (Hutchinson), Ojabo, (Taylor) Upshaw and others joined the quarterback multiple times.”

— Harbaugh on Michigan’s pass rush. The Wolverines had two sacks and nine quarterback rushes. Ojabo and Upshaw each had a bag, while Hutchinson had four pressings.

“It’s great to have him on our side for sure. He runs so hard every game and we don’t expect anything else from him. He’s consistent and just a power horse. We’re lucky to have him.”

– Tight end Luke Schoonmaker on Hassan Haskins career day. He ran 27 times for 168 yards and a touchdown.

“It’s good if you can drive and get the ball into the red zone. Always wanting to finish with touchdowns. I thought we got it right for once by winning a penalty on a first and 15. But ‘Schoony’ was a big factor in the conversion in the red zone tonight, so that’s a plus. It was great to see him play a good game again.”

— Harbaugh on Michigan’s red zone violation. The Wolverines scored three touchdowns, including two passes from Cade McNamara to Schoonmaker, but also had to settle for three field goals from Jake Moody.
