Hideki Kamiya says he wants to make an Okami sequel “Someday”

Before leading the prosecutor at PlatinumGames, Hideki Kamiya worked with Capcom and Clover Studio to direct projects such as the legendary action-adventure game, Okami.

Although we have seen a new version of the original title appear on Switch in recent years, there have also been calls for a sequel. In a recent interview with the YouTube channel Cutscenes, Kamiya discusses how he would also be interested in a sequel, as he feels he has some unfinished business:

When I made Okami, I never thought I would leave Capcom and work somewhere else. Okami had been built on different ideas and I figured that in terms of things that did not come up as I probably would have a chance to work on it again, I could foreshadow and elaborate on some things, addressing them in a follow up and answer the player’s questions while suggesting how the story ends.

When you build a new IP, you get a lot of ideas in the middle of the development that you want to implement. But in the later part of the development, some of these ideas can no longer be implemented for system or schedule reasons. You start saying, “Let’s put what we could not this time in the sequel.”

In Okami, for both the story and the mechanics of Celestial Brush, we talk about how we could take time and develop these further in a sequel, making it more fun and stress-free. We obviously wanted to make a sequel. Eventually, things took a different turn. Okami was not a commercial hit when we released it. It did not sell as many copies. However, it gradually became a critical success, positively received by many people.

It eventually reached even more people with the release of Okami HD on various platforms. It grew the player base and allowed even more people to enjoy the game. At the same time, I started seeing people ask about these plot points, which we left hanging, and asked for a sequel. The more I see them, the more I feel it is a work I have left unfinished. There’s always this part of me that thinks I should take care of this at some point. I will do it one day.
