2036 Olympics in India – IOA in talks with IOC: The president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Narinder Batra, said on Saturday that the organization is in talks with the International Olympic Committee for a possible Indian bid to host the 2036 summer games, and that the Motera Stadium Ahmedabad is the best place for an opening ceremony.
After it was rebuilt to become the largest cricket stadium in the world, the Motera facility was renamed ‘Narendra Modi Stadium’ by the Gujarat Cricket Association in February 2021.
“If someone asks me about the venue for the opening ceremony right now, it will definitely be the Motera stadium,” Batra told reporters here.
“There is no stadium more suitable to host the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games (in India). I can’t say what will happen in 2036…. (but) I will propose Ahmedabad as the venue for the opening ceremony. “ added the IOA chief. He was speaking to the media at an event organized by TransStadia, a sports infrastructure company based in the city.
“When you say opening ceremony, it means that athletics will also be played (in the same place). And athletics is the most important event (in the Olympics). “ he said.
The Olympics can be held in three or four cities in India, and the IOA is in talks with the IOC about India’s possible bid for 2036, Batra said. The chances that India would have the opportunity were bright, he added.
“If we are talking about the 2036 Olympic Games, then yes, we are already talking to the International Olympic Committee. Being the president of the IOA, my discussions with the IOC occur on the subject … The 2036 Olympic Games will end in two or three years, and we are currently discussing with the IOC ”. he said.
Recently, the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) invited proposals from consultants to conduct a ‘gap analysis’ to assess whether the infrastructure in the city was adequate to host the Olympic Games. A proper presentation for India’s candidacy will be prepared after a new president takes office after the IOA elections in December, Batra said. India is one of six or seven possible contenders for the 2036 games, he added.
“India has appeared on the global radar and is on its way to becoming the third largest economy in the world. By 2036, it will be the second or third largest economy. “ he said.
The IOC adopted a new bidding process for the selection of the host city, and Brisbane received the 2032 games using this process, Batra noted.
“You have to show them three or four centers, because now you can do it in various places, then you will show them the places, both new and existing, and what their legacy is. The Motera Stadium has a legacy ”. he said
