IPL 2021 | He never called Faf du Plessis a dangerous T20 hitter, says Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir has stated that he never called Chennai Super Kings’ Faf du Plessis a dangerous T20 hitter, adding that he has exceeded expectations in the current season. The former Indian starter further added that du Plessis’s good form in CPL has helped him perform well at IPL 2021.

After last year’s miserable performance, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) bounced back in the 14th edition of the IPL and became the first team to qualify for the playoffs this season. The consistency of CSK’s first games was the highlight of the season. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis are already in pursuit of the Orange Cap. The former South Africa captain is currently the second highest IPL 2021 run scorer with 546 runs in 14 matches averaging 45.50.

Reflecting on Du Plessis’s performance this season, Gautam Gambhir stated that he never considered the 37-year-old a dangerous T20 hitter. The former Indian cricketer further added that du Plessis has exceeded expectations in the ongoing tournament.

“Honestly, if you ask me, yes (it has exceeded expectations),” Gambhir told ESPNCricinfo.

“I never thought he was such a dangerous T20 hitter. Yes, he had gotten runs for CSK, but he’s never had the impact that someone like Shane Watson had. He’ll score those 50 of 40 balls, but he can’t hurt bowlers from The opposition is not going to be an outright winner of the game. If Shane Watson gets runs, he’ll get 100 out of 60 balls. So yeah, Faf has definitely exceeded all expectations, not just from me, but from many other people as well. ” Gambhir said.

Although CSK did not qualify for the playoffs at IPL 2020, du Plessis stood out with 449 runs in 13 games averaging 40.81. The South African continued his good form and played few good shots in the 2021 CPL, which included 120 unbeaten and half a century. The 37-year-old hitter’s experience helped the Saint Lucia Kings reach their second consecutive CPL final.

Gambhir acknowledged that Faf du Plessis’s good form in the CPL helped him to excel in the 14th edition of the IPL.

“He was in good shape even in the CPL. Those who enter the game after playing in any league have a better chance of doing well, as the IPL is a high-quality tournament. The races under your belt are always important,” he said. .

“There is no alternative to experience. With experience, Faf knows, when you’re in good shape, you have to make the most of it. Once you lose, it becomes very difficult to find. Look at what is happening to Eoin Morgan.”

Chennai Super Kings will face Delhi Capitals in Qualifier 1 in Dubai on Sunday.
