Jeevan Mendis announces retirement from international cricket

Sri Lanka’s all-rounder Balapuwaduge Manukulasuriya Amith Jeevan Mendis has announced his retirement from international cricket.

Jeevan Mendis, an all-round player who bowls leg spin, has represented Sri Lanka in the 2012 T20 World Cup and 2015 World Cup. After a three-year break from international cricket, Mendis was brought to the T20I series against Bangladesh in February 2018. Meanwhile, he was also included in Sri Lanka’s 2019 Cricket World Cup squad.

He made his One Day International (ODI) debut on 1 June 2010 against Zimbabwe and last played One Day International on 28 June 2019 against South Africa.

In total, he has played 58 ODIs for Sri Lanka and was able to score 636 runs with an average of 18.70, including half a century, and he gained 28 wickets in his career with an average of 43.00, an economy at 5.14 and a strike rate of 50.1.

Jeevan Mendis played 22 T20 internationals for Sri Lanka, scoring 207 runs and getting 12 wickets. Mendis also participated in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and was part of the Delhi franchise, he played only 3 IPL matches where he scored 23 runs and chose only one wicket.

The 38-year-old Jeevan Mendis took to Twitter to announce his retirement from international cricket, and he said he had an “incredible journey” with Sri Lanka Cricket. He wrote:

It was an incredible journey with Sri Lanka Cricket that I was honored to be a part of since 2010. So many valuable experiences and beautiful memories that I cherish through this amazing journey. I would like to thank all my coaches and teammates. I am eternally grateful! @OfficialSLC “
