Malmo FF vs. Chelsea – Football Match Report – November 2, 2021

Chelsea took a huge step towards the knockout stage of the Champions League on Tuesday with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Malmö in Sweden.

Thomas Tuchel’s side, without strikers Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner due to injury, were frustrated in front of goal and found a breakthrough difficult to find until Hakim Ziyech converted a cross from Callum Hudson-Odoi in the 56th minute.

Until then, the Champions League holders had toiled in front of a rowdy home crowd at the Eleda Stadium, creating several chances but no clear ones.

Thiago Silva saw an attempt go off the line when Chelsea pushed for a second and Kai Havertz, in the de facto striker role, had a shot saved by Malmö goalkeeper Johan Dahlin.

Malmö’s best chance of the second half came in the 64th minute to Erdal Rakip, but he ignored several better-positioned teammates before firing a shot harmlessly over the crossbar.

United States international Christian Pulisic returned from injury to make the bench for Chelsea. He came on as a substitute in the 74th minute to take his first minutes since August.

Chelsea reach nine points from four games in Group H and are level with Juventus, who will face Zenit St Petersburg later on Tuesday.
