Marvel Concept Artist Shares A Look At Mysterious Canceled Sci-Fi Movie

Marvel Studios concept artist Phil Saunders shares artwork for a canceled sci-fi film that references a high-tech, conflict-ridden world.

Artist Phil Saunders, known for his work on numerous films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently shared a look at concept art for a mysterious science fiction film that never saw the light of day.

Saunders, who has previously produced early artwork for Marvel films such as The Avengers and Iron Man 3, shared a series of images he shot for a sci-fi feature film in 2019. The artist did not identify the title or home studio of the film, only that the project was eventually cancelled. “Shame,” Saunders wrote of the project’s demise, “because it was really intriguing sci-fi on a budget budget and I think it would have been great. I need to pin some fun clouds though!!”

The series of images seems to depict a futuristic society, with angular architecture, alien technology and obelisks floating in the sky. Some works of art predict disaster, such as the drawings of ominous circular storm clouds and a group of people fleeing an explosion. While the images bear some similarities to other future sci-fi franchises, such as Star Trek and the vastness, none of the images directly links the project to any previously established property.

Only one drawing seems to point to plot details for the canceled sci-fi movie. The image shows technology labeled “alien-made ore shoppers” connected in a train of railroad cars. One of the cars has graffiti that reads ‘SLAGS GO HOME’, referring to a conflict between different species or factions. Beyond this, however, clues to the project’s identity are scarce, leaving the details shrouded in mystery.

Saunders’ artwork has already contributed significantly to the sci-fi genre, as his MCU projects have become some of the most successful films of all time. After first working with Marvel Studios as an illustrator on Iron Man in 2008 Saunders started making concept art for Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming and all four avengers movies. He also made work for this year WandaVision and Spider-Man: No Way Home, as well as next year’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

While much of Saunders’ work in recent years has been with Marvel, the artist has also worked on other sci-fi projects outside of the superhero realm. Saunders was a concept artist for John Carter in 2012 and an illustrator for Ender’s game in 2013 adaptations of influential sci-fi novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs and Orson Scott Card respectively. He was also a concept artist for 2019 Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker and this year is coming Kingsman precursor, The King’s Husband.
