Marvel’s Avengers: Square Enix removes paid XP increases one month after the player’s setback

Paid XP boost will be removed from Marvel’s Avengers today after setbacks from the gaming community, less than a month after they were first introduced.

Prior to the launch of Marvel’s Avengers, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics released one blog post in August 2020 who said, “Real-money content in Marvel’s Avengers will only be aesthetic additions.” So around the beginning of last month, paid XP boosts had been quietly introduced to the Avengers market, and as expected, the players were not satisfied, as first reported by Video Games Chronicle.

It seems that the development team behind Avengers heard the message loud and clear, because today it announced that Hero’s Catalysts and Fragment Extractors – both of which are essentially paid XP boosts for use in the game – would be removed from the marketplace at the end of today.

“We apologize for not responding earlier to your concerns about the addition of paid consumables to the marketplace. We introduced them as an opportunity for a developing player base and did not see them as pay-to-win as they do not offer power directly. After Having considered your feedback, we have decided that by the end of today we will remove Hero’s Catalysts and Fragment Extractors for purchase, they will continue to be rewards and those already owned can still be used.

We hope this can be the first step in rebuilding your trust in us as a team. It remains our goal to make the best game possible. Thank you for being a part of Marvel’s Avengers community. ”

As mentioned in the statement above, the XP boosts did not actually change the levels of playable Avengers in the game. Instead, they accelerated the intake of experience while playing. So even though players did not exactly buy levels in the game, they were able to use real-world money to get a leg up on the level of an Avenger.
