Michael Porter Jr out for ‘Foreseeable Future’

The Denver Nuggets head coach said the team has no real update on Michael Porter Jr.’s injured back, but the forward is expected to be in the “near future.” Porter was injured in a game against the Houston Rockets this weekend. He underwent testing Monday and will undergo further testing in the coming days.

When asked to clarify a timeline, Malone said: “Michael could be back in a week. It can be longer than that. When I say in the near future, I’m not exactly sure what that means.”

Porter slipped in the 2018 NBA Draft over concerns about a back injury he sustained in Missouri. Porter has already had two back surgeries. However, he had a breakthrough season in 2020-21. Porter averaged 19.1 points and 7.3 rebounds while appearing in 61 games.

That strong season led to the Nuggets and Porter agreeing to a contract extension of up to five years, $172.5 million. Denver has somewhat protected itself as the final season is partially guaranteed with triggers related to games played and achievements in the previous seasons.
