Nathan Tella has signed a new three-and-a-half year contract to remain at Southampton until summer 2025.

Having spent time in Arsenal’s Youth Academy as a child, Tella joined Southampton in 2017 after trials at Reading and Norwich before spending three years in the Academy until he made his senior debut in June 2020 coincidentally against the Canaries in a 3-0 away win at Carrow Road.

Tella has since gone on to score two goals in 33 appearances for the Saints in all competitions.

Speaking about his decision to extend his contract which could see him spend eight years at St Mary’s in total if he completes the new contract in full, Tella said: “I’m over the moon. I really like the club, I’m really enjoying my time here.

“The fact that the club are believing in me is something I’m so thankful for.”

Tella went on to praise the club for their belief in his development and is keen to repay their support by continuing to progress, adding: “The club have been nothing but great to me all season, and last season as well. They believe in me and now I’ve got to believe in myself.

“Moving forward, I want to repay the faith they have in me. I want to play more games, be involved in more goals and help the team progress. ”

Manager, Ralph Hasenhuttl meanwhile hailed Tella as a future star and praised the 22 year-old for his ability to push his game and learn, as he said: “Nathan is a good example of a young player with a lot of potential who is willing to learn and to push himself.

“These are the sort of players we like to develop at Southampton.”

Reflecting on Tella’s performances so far, Hasenhuttl added: “He has played some excellent games already and made some good improvements in his time working with us.

“I think he can develop a lot more here, so it is good that he can focus on improving his qualities with us even more over the coming seasons.”
