New Apple TV Plus show is being filmed in San Francisco

San Francisco’s reputation in the movie world has soared in recent years, with major movie shoots like “Shang-Chi”, “Venom” and “The Matrix Resurrections” taking over city streets for high-flying stunts.

While there won’t be any low-flying helicopters or gunfights with Woody Harrelson, the city is hosting another substantial shooting this week for a new Apple TV Plus show codenamed “Madeline.” While the San Francisco Film Commission won’t reveal the actual title, Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“Loki”), Oliver Jackson-Cohen (“The Haunting of Hill House”) and Stephan James (“If Beale Street Could Talk”) will.

Deadline reports that the same trio will star in a Veronica West (“High Fidelity”) psychological thriller called “Surface,” produced by Reese Witherspoon’s media company Hello Sunshine and directed by Sam Miller (“I May Destroy You”). The plot revolves around Sophie, Mbatha-Raw’s character, who gets her life back on track after a suicide attempt.

This week, residents of Lower Haight were notified that the show would be filmed nearby. This morning, a film crew took over several Waller Street garages between Pierce and Scott Street to store equipment for a scene in which Mbatha-Raw jogged down Haight Street behind a camera mounted on the back of a bicycle.

Scenes were filmed at the Palace Hotel yesterday, and shooting will continue throughout the week at the Center for Fine Arts and Chinatown. Interior scenes have already been filmed in Vancouver, which often serves as the on-screen stand-in for San Francisco.
