Philadelphia Eagles start Gardner Minshew at QB vs. New York Jets with Jalen Hurts sick

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – Gardner Minshew will start as quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles in Sunday’s game against the New York Jets in place of the injured Jalen Hurts.

Hurts will be inactive for the game.

Hurts sprained his left ankle in the second half against the New York Giants when he was stepped on. He ended the fight, but limped noticeably at times.

Earlier this week, Hurts announced he would be “ready to go” for the Jets game.

“You know, of course, that I’m dealing with a small thing, but it’s business as usual,” he said.

However, Minshew got the bulk of the snaps during training on Thursday and Friday.

Hurts are expected to remain the Eagles’ starter no matter how Minshew plays, sources said. He has completed 60.1% of his passes through 12 games in 2,435 yards with 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions, while achieving 695 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. Hurts will no doubt come from his worst start as a professional, throwing three interceptions in his career in a 13-7 loss to the Giants.

The Eagles acquired Minshew for a conditional election in the sixth round in 2022 in late August. He has appeared in one game this season, going 2-for-2 in 11 yards in the final minutes of a win over the Detroit Lions. Minshew, 25, started 24 games over two seasons in Jacksonville, completing 62.9% of his throws in 5,530 yards with 37 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

“I feel comfortable with both guys – both guys, if they have to play the way they prepared all week and did their business,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said earlier in the week.
