The 2021 pitching campaign for Cincinnati Reds candidate Reiver Sanmartin will continue this Fall/Winter as he joins Estrellas in the Dominican Winter League.
The 2021 season started for Reiver Sanmartin in Double-A Chattanooga. The lefty spent only a few weeks at the Lookouts, making three starts and one relief appearance in Double-A South. Over his 18.0 innings, he gave up only one earned run and quickly promoted to Triple-A Louisville. In the final four months of the season, he made 14 starts and seven relief appearances with the Bats. In his 82.1 innings with Louisville, he racked up a 3.94 ERA.
Because Cincinnati needed someone to fill in for an injured Wade Miley for the last two starts of the year, the front office added Reiver Sanmartin to the 40-man roster and called him on to fill in. The lefthander from Colombia threw well in his home debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates, gave up only one run in 5.2 innings, walked a batter and struckout five batters. His next start came on the last day of the regular season and also was against the Pirates, but this time it took place in Pittsburgh. Sanmartin was just as good in his second go-around against the divisional opponent, as he allowed a 6.0-inning run with a walk and six strikeouts.
At the moment, the six teams in the Dominican Winter League are going through their “spring training” period. More Reds prospects will most likely enter the competition, but the rosters are not yet official. Several prospects are in “camp” playing for a chance to start the season on the active roster. Along with Sanmartin, it is also known that infielder Francisco Urbaez and outfielders Mariel Bautista and Allen Cerda are camping for their teams in the competition. The games start on October 27.
