SunRisers Hyderabad’s treatment of former captain David Warner during the fourteenth season of the Indian Premier League has been one of the biggest talking points.
Warner, who led SRH to his only IPL title in 2016, was stripped of his leadership duties midway through season 14. He was later kicked out of the starting lineup on two separate occasions.
The southpaw has been a consistent scoring monster for the franchise throughout the years. Hence, many wonder what is the possible reason for such harsh treatment.
Fox Cricket has produced a report that explains the reasons behind Moody’s decision to put his compatriot on the bench. They claimed that SRH’s ‘Cricket Director’ Tom Moody’s inclination to become Team India’s head coach pushed him to make that decision.
According to the same report, the owners of SunRisers Hyderabad are “influential figures” at BCCI. It may have led Moody and the rest of management to shut Warner out and give young Indian players a chance.
The report stated:
“Foxsports.com.au understands that the former World Cup winning and well traveled coach is considering the position of Indian coach, which Shastri will vacate after the impending T20 World Cup. Moody, who after a long period as the Sunrisers head coach, where along with Warner as their captain led them to glory in 2016, he was replaced by former England coach Trevor Bayliss, but was later named the franchise’s director of cricket. “
“Sunrisers owners are believed to be influential figures at BCCI, which could explain the decision to cut Warner out of its last half-dozen games and turn to young people,” the report added.
The report also adds that Warner has been contacted by several other franchises.
“Warner has also been approached by several other IPL franchises, who have been shocked that the run-scoring machine has been sidelined.”
It’s worth noting that Trevor Bayliss is SRH’s head coach. Tom Moody, who previously trained the “Orange Army” to achieve title glory, is the “Director of Cricket.”
Moody’s desire to become an Indian coach is well known. The former World Cup winner has been trying tirelessly since 2005 to claim the highest-profile job in the sport.
‘Thank you for the memories created’ – David Warner to his fans
Meanwhile, Warner wrote an emotional note to fans on Friday as the SRH players took to the field for their final game of the season.
Warner’s relationship with the franchise has deteriorated greatly. Despite Kane Williamson’s absence from playing XI, the Australian did not get a chance to play his last game for SRH.
Warner thanked his fans for their constant support during his tenure in the franchise throughout the years through an emotional note on Instagram.

Warner’s journey with SRH may have ended on a painful note, but his contribution to the franchise will always remain a part of IPL folklore.
