Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was injured in Thursday’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson underwent surgery to repair a torn tendon in the middle finger of his pitching hand on Friday and could be out of the game for four to eight weeks, according to multiple reports from the media.

Wilson consulted with a Los Angeles hand specialist, Dr. Steven Shin, on Friday to determine the extent of the injury to the finger of his right hand. He was injured Thursday night in Seattle’s 26-17 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

The Seahawks confirmed that Wilson’s surgery had been performed and issued a statement from Dr. Shin, who said he was “totally confident” that the quarterback would return this season.

NFL Network Ian Rapoport provided a more specific estimate of Wilson’s absence, reporting that the Seahawks are likely to be without him for about six weeks.

Dr. Shin’s statement read: “Russell Wilson injured his right middle finger during last night’s game against the Rams. He suffered two finger injuries: a ruptured extensor tendon (hammer toe) and a comminuted fracture-dislocation of the proximal interphalangeal joint. He underwent successful surgery today in Los Angeles to repair both injuries. He will begin therapy this weekend and is expected to return to play later this season.

“Based on what I saw today, I am completely confident that Russell will return to the NFL this season and play at the same world-class level that fans have come to expect from one of the best quarterbacks in the game.”

Wilson was injured on a deep throw in the third quarter to Tyler Lockett, with his follow-up hitting the wrist of Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald.

After the incomplete, Wilson raised his bent middle finger. He returned for the next unit after having his finger taped, but threw only one pass in a run of three and out before giving way to backup Geno Smith.

The 32-year-old has yet to miss a start in his 10 NFL seasons. His streaks of 149 consecutive regular-season starts and 165 starts counting the regular season and postseason are the longest active careers among quarterbacks.

Wilson finished 11 of 16 for 152 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Smith led the Seahawks on a 98-yard, 10-play touchdown drive and finished 10 of 17 for 131 yards with a TD and an interception.

Smith last started a game in 2017 when he was a member of the New York Giants. Overall, he has started 31 games, 30 with the New York Jets from 2013-16.

“I’m totally confident that Geno can do this, and I think you saw him last night in a really tough situation, hurry up, all that sort of thing, he was really good at it,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said the Friday before. . the extent of Wilson’s injury was known. “He really understands the system. So we can continue with the preparation and that will help everyone.”

“Geno makes the guys … feel safe and comfortable, and I thought it was a great performance.”

Smith was a second-round pick for the Jets in the 2013 draft, but he had big problems. He threw 21 interceptions against 12 touchdowns while starting all 16 games as a rookie and had 13 of each in 2014 when he started 13 games.

In addition to the Giants, Smith was on the Los Angeles Chargers roster in 2018 before joining the Seahawks in May 2019.

The Seahawks (2-3) have a long week to prepare for their next opponent. They will face the Pittsburgh Steelers (1-3) on October 17.
