Sounders exercise the club’s option on Xavier Arreaga and keep him until at least 2022

With the 2022 Seattle Sounders getting off to an early start with the Concacaf Champions League, more emphasis is expected to be placed on continuity.

That’s exactly why they’ve picked up 27-year-old Xavier Arreaga’s contract option, who will keep the Ecuadorian until December.

In 2021, Arreaga started 25 out of 26 games for a total of 2,165 minutes of regular season play and was a crucial piece in Brian Schmetzer’s three-man backline. Xavier’s partnership with Yeimar Gomez Andrade – which started in a team-high 36 games in all competitions – was actually the most consistent pairing in the defense of the Rave Green.

While Arreaga is an extraordinarily talented defender with the potential to become a top center back in MLS, it’s no secret that there have been times when wrong decisions or mistakes coming out of the back resulted in some disappointing performances.

No one knows better which aspects of his game need improvement than Arreaga himself. It is that self-awareness that has allowed him to get better year after year and has allowed him to double the number of minutes played since he arrived here in 2019. It’s that growth that’s been a critical element in his role that has now earned him an opportunity for a longer-term deal.

According to sources with knowledge of negotiations with Sounders, Pulso Sports was told that talks are underway and the intention is to bind the defender to a multi-year contract within a few months.

The initiative to sign Arreaga from Barcelona SC in 2019 provided a young prospect that would eventually become a defensive pillar for the franchise. Another attractive feature of the Guayaquil aborigine is that after going through the proper migration procedure, he will likely soon be awarded a green card which would open up an international spot.

It hasn’t always been the case, but there have been glimpses of aggressive defense, accurate passing, set pieces goals and enough evidence to suggest that Arreaga’s final product could live up to that expectation.

Nevertheless, it is the future contract renewal that will indicate the organization’s true perception of their initial investment and how committed they are to Arreaga.
