Southside San Antonio’s Dead Tree Books has opened a new store

Husband-wife duo Kenny and Melissa Johnson were at a point where they thought they wouldn’t find a smaller space for their beloved Southside bookstore, Dead Tree Books. Thanks to community support, Kenny tells MySA they’ve found a place where it will continue to serve San Antonio’s Southside.

Dead Tree Books is now located in Colao Plaza at 2815 Southcross Boulevard, on the corner of Southcross and Quintana Road. The store was previously at 5645 S Flores Street.

The new store is about 1,000 square meters smaller than the previous one. Although the owners are downsizing, Kenny says they still have many books for the community. He adds that they can also order a novel or short story and send it to someone if necessary.

The Johnsons started the bookstore in 2016, but struggled to keep the doors open. Over the years, Dead Tree Books has gotten help from the local community on social media. He says people will continue to donate to his GoFundMe page, where the money will be used to keep the store afloat.

“That (the GoFundMe page) made possible some things that we really didn’t think were possible,” says Kenny. “We just want people to know that we are grateful for everything. We will continue to serve the Southside as long as possible.”

Dead Tree Books will host two book signings in December – Author of Just one look Joanne R. Easley on December 4 and author of: I am a gift and I have many gifts Johana Lizeth Hernandez on December 11.

The shop is open every day from noon to 7pm; closed on Tuesday. The store closes at 5:00 PM on Sundays
