When the very first trailer for the batter arrived in August 2020, it came with a surprising bit of soundtracking – an orchestral, trailer-music version of Nirvana’s “Something In The Way.” Sometimes such song choices are just a matter of finding the right mood, or a specific connection to the lyrics – but in the case of Matt Reeves’ new take on DC’s Caped Crusader, there was a much more specific reason behind it. It’s a tune that touched the filmmaker’s vision of the character—a tune that proved pivotal in shaping Robert Pattinson’s take on Bruce Wayne, the wealthy orphan who pulls the hood and shakes up Gotham’s criminal underworld.

“When I write, I listen to music, and while I was writing the first act, I put on Nirvana’s ‘Something In The Way,'” Reeves says. Empire in the coming the batter problem. It’s a song that promises a very different take on recent Bats on the big screen, from Christian Bale to Ben Affleck – a song inspired by a 90s grunge icon. “Then it occurred to me that, instead of Bruce Wayne to make the playboy version that we’ve seen before, there’s another version that went through a great tragedy and turned into a recluse, so I started making this connection with Gus Van Sant’s Last days, and the idea that this fictionalized version of Kurt Cobain is in this kind of dilapidated mansion.”

The ideal actor for the job? Pattinson, whose amazing performance in the Safdie Brothers’ Good time Reeves’ attention had been drawn. “In that film you really felt his vulnerability and despair, but you could also feel his strength,” explains the director. “I thought that was a great mix. He also has that Kurt Cobain thing, where he looks like a rock star, but you also feel like he could be a recluse.”

It’s not just a different take on Bruce Wayne – that means a different Batman, one with less of the flashy gadgets that Lucius Fox (not featured here) offers in the Nolan trilogy, and a more homemade, self-constructed edge. . “Bruce is hiding,” Pattinson says. “He’s not a socialite at all. He builds all these little structures and stuff, just with Alfred. And even Alfred thinks he’s gone mad!”

It’s a difference you’ll see in the Batsuit, which looks like it went through the wringer. “He’s been out every night for two years and got beat up and shot and stabbed and burned, and it shows,” the actor explains. “There’s a bullet scratching the hood at the very beginning. I don’t think that’s been done before.”
