Watch as Damon and Driver prepare to go medieval in the upcoming action movie.
This isn’t fanfiction where Jason Bourne takes on Kylo Ren. In the above images from Ridley Scott’s upcoming historical thriller The last duel, Matt Damon as Norman knight Jean de Carrouges dons his suit and then engages in a joust with Driver’s character, squire Jacques Le Gris.
However, the video begins with Jodie Comer as Marguerite, Carrouges’ wife. She is assisted by her ladies-in-waiting and wages her own struggle – to survive after the men fight. The outcome of the clash sends Comer’s character to her death for lying by claiming that Le Gris raped her or upheld her honor.
The story of The last duel is based on a real and fascinating historical event.
Matt Damon, Ben Affleck (surprisingly blond Count Pierre d’Alençon in the video) and screenwriter Nicole Holofcener adapted their script from American historian Eric Jager’s book, The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal and Battle.
Here’s the Random House book synopsis, which gives a pretty thorough analysis of the story:
In the midst of the devastating Hundred Years’ War between France and England, Jean de Carrouges, a Norman knight fresh from battle in Scotland, returns home with another deadly threat. His wife, Marguerite, has accused squire Jacques Le Gris of rape. A stalled court orders a fight between the two men, with Marguerite’s fate also at stake. Because if her husband loses the duel, she is put to death as a false accuser.
As enemy forces plunder the land and rebellion and plague threaten everyone’s lives, Carrouges and Le Gris meet in full armor on a walled field in Paris. What follows is the last duel ever approved by the Parliament of Paris, a fierce battle with lance, sword and dagger before a huge crowd, including the teenage king Charles VI, in which both fighters are wounded – but only one fatally.
The last duel will premiere in theaters on October 15.
