The tragic death of Brittany Murphy is explored in the trailer of HBO’s What Happened, Brittany Murphy?

Brittany Murphy’s brilliant career and tragic death will be back in the spotlight after HBO Max has released the first trailer for the upcoming documentary What Happened, Brittany Murphy? on Thursday.

The actress, who died in 2009 at the age of 32, is shown in vintage images depicting her rise in films like Clueless and 8 Mile to her shocking weight loss and isolation with husband Simon Monjack in her final years.

Monjack, who died of similar unusual circumstances just six months after Murphy, is presented in a sinister light in the trailer, with interview topics suggesting that he threw a web of lies and “made sure no one could get to Murphy.”

From the get-go, the trailer focuses on Murphy’s tragic death, with footage from the news coverage of her passing and a photo of her affectionate gaze on Monjack.

“Simon took her,” a woman says in the trailer. “He made sure no one could get to her.”

Then the trailer shifts to more positive coverage that harks back to her teenage years.

She has been seen grinning and giggling from ear to ear while introducing herself in a video she made when she was still in high school.

But the trailer presents a conflict as Murphy matured into older roles, where her appearance was suddenly scrutinized.

“Brittany Murphy was super cute, but in Hollywood you have to be Gwyneth Paltrow,” says one person.

Footage on the red carpet shows Murphy looking skinny than before and dyeing her hair blonde.

“She wasn’t a typical pretty girl,” adds another interview topic. And so many young women in Hollywood are under tremendous pressure. She had lost excessive weight and dressed completely differently.’

Kathy Najimy, who co-starred with Murphy in the animated series King Of The Hill, speculates that Monjack came along when Brittany was in poor health, both physically and mentally.

“During a slump she was having, he came by,” she says. “I think her judgment was clouded there and she became prey.”

Another topic mentions Monjack’s unbelievable lies, including claims that he dated Elle Macpherson and Madonna and that he was dying of a brain tumor, even though they were all untrue.

“Every word out of his mouth was a lie,” the man says.

“We were all scared and panicked. Like, who was this man?’ Najimy remembers thinking.

People interviewed claim that Monjack and Murphy stayed in their house “24/7” and that “no one got close to her” after she was with him.

Some of the interview subjects seem to think he was involved in her death.

“So who benefited from her death?” one person muses.

Others speculate that poisonous mold in the couple’s home may have played a role in Murphy’s death, though it’s unclear whether the film will seriously pursue that angle or if it’s just a red herring.

“A healthy 32-year-old doesn’t just die,” one woman adds in the last line of the trailer.

What happened, Brittany Murphy? will be released in two parts on HBO Max starting October 14.
