The match in Bosnia will help prepare the US team for a trio of World Cup qualifiers during the January international window. During that period, there will be home games against El Salvador on January 27, an away game against Canada three days later and a home game against Honduras on February 2. After six games, the US is in second place in the Octagonal, one point ahead of Canada. .

The US still plans to hold its usual training camp in January so that MLS players can maintain a semblance of fitness during the MLS off-season, but no additional friendlies are scheduled. The team’s foreign players will join the camp as the World Cup qualifiers approach.

This will be the third meeting between the teams since the founding of the Football Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1992. A hat-trick by Jozy Altidore highlighted the USA’s 4-3 victory on August 14, 2013 in Sarajevo. Most recently, the teams took to the field at the same venue to open the 2018 US schedule, with the two teams tied 0-0.
