Valve unveils the biggest Steam games of 2021, and Valheim has been a hit

Just ahead of the new year, Valve has unveiled the biggest Steam games of 2021. Divided into categories such as bestsellers, most played and new releases among others, the review gives us a good insight into what has been a hit with PC gamers lately year. While there are plenty of the usual artists around, there are also some indie game outbursts in the mix.

Vikingespil Valheim is one such example. The clever indie hit from developer Iron Gate has entered the ‘platinum’ section of Steam’s 100 best-selling games, which are “measured by gross revenue”. It places it among some hefty companies, being one of 12 games in the section, which also includes regulars like CS: GO, PUBG, Dota 2, Grand Theft Auto V, Rainbow Six Siege and Apex Legends.

This means that Valheim has naturally landed in the platinum section of the best new releases with gross revenue, but it has also earned itself a top spot in Steam’s most played in 2021, having reached a top number of players of over 200,000 in the past year. The real number is significantly beyond this, as SteamDB registers that the game peaked at just over half a million concurrent players back in February. Phwoar.

Other hits on Steam this year include Amazon Games’ MMORPG newcomer New World, which has entered the same three platinum categories and hit a storming 913,634 top players in early October, according to SteamDB. Dead by Daylight has also made it to platinum top sellers, while in new releases, Age of Empires VI, Farming Simulator 22, Forza Horizon 5 and Resident Evil Village are among the best this year.

The best Early Access graduate category (also measured by gross income) features the action-adventure survival game Subnautica: Below Zero, the World War II shooter Hell Let Loose (which we really enjoyed in our review on that link), a fun and chaotic physics fighter Totally Accurate Battle Simulator and survival-horror FPS game GTFO, among others.

There are also the best VR and controller-friendly categories you can check out if it’s for you, as well as a blog post from Valve describing how it reached the winners in each section. If you’re looking for what we expect to be the top 10 PC games of 2021, as decided by an employee’s poll, or the best PC games ever, you know where to click.
