We cannot compare the new generation to the Big Three

Former world No. 3 David Ferrer acknowledged that the new generation gets better every year, but made it clear that they cannot be compared to Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. Nadal, Djokovic and Federer are widely regarded as the three greatest tennis players in tennis history as each has 20 Majors in his collection.

Dominic Thiem and Daniil Medvedev have made a breakthrough at Grand Slam level, but the others haven’t yet. “They improve every year. We cannot compare this generation with Rafa, Roger and Novak, because that is impossible.

They are the best three players in history,” Ferrer told Sky Sports.

Ferrer, Tomas Berdych, Mark Philippoussis talk about the new generation

Berdych, who retired in 2019, thinks we can expect more unpredictable results in men’s tennis in the future.

Nadal and Federer struggled with injuries in 2021, while Djokovic managed to stay healthy but suffered two major disappointments at the Tokyo Olympics and the US Open. “Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic have been around for a very, very long time and it shows what a great generation of tennis it has been.

We can now expect more unpredictable results,” said Berdych. “I really like the way Stefanos Tsitsipas plays, because he plays very aggressive and creative on the track. However, the second half of his season was a bit flat.”

Meanwhile, former Australian tennis star Philippoussis Medvedev named Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas as the three most important men of the new generation. “Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Tsitsipas are the most important men.

There are also other guys, but they are not as consistent as the three mentioned,” explains Philippoussis. “I am especially excited about Tsitsipas because I love his all-round play. I love his passion, just love the way he gives his all and shows how much it means to him on the pitch. He’s a nice mover and not afraid to come to the net.”
