Why did they kill Eskel in The Witcher? Does he die in the books?

**Warning – Major Spoilers Ahead**

Henry Cavill is finally back to reprise the silver-haired monster hunter, Geralt of Rivia, in The Witcher Season 2 after a series of injuries and pandemic delays. Moving on, we explore why Eskel was killed in season 2 and whether the character dies in the books as well.

The second season of The Witcher is said to be based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s Blood of Elves book and marks the beginning of the Time of Contempt. This chapter continues after the battle of Sodden and sees Geralt bring Ciri back to Kaer Morhen to protect and train her.

Netflix’s series is a direct adaptation of Sapkowski’s book series, and the material has also been adapted into a popular video game series by CD Projekt Red – of which actor Cavill is an avid fan.

Why did they kill Eskel in season 2 of The Witcher?

Eskel died in Season 2 Episode 2 titled ‘Kaer Morhen’ after being attacked by a Leshy.

The Leshy eventually turned Eskel into a similar tree-like monster, but Geralt and Vesemir kill the character because it’s too dangerous for him to stay alive.

The time it took Geralt and Vesemir to find a cure would have caused Eskel too much damage in his transformed state.

The difficult decision to kill Eskel was echoed in another scenario between Geralt and his mentor when the first tried to convince Vesemir that Ciri was too special to kill.

Does the character in the book die?

No, Eskel doesn’t die in the books and plays a pretty significant role in future events in The Witcher’s literary series.

Fans took to Twitter to express their disappointment and confusion as to why the Netflix series’ writers decided to kill a fan favorite from the book and video game series.

Since Eskel is quite a significant figure in future events in the source material, it will be interesting to see how the show handles his absence.
