Indian fighter Pinki lost 5-2 to American Jenna Burkert in the fight for the bronze medal of the 55 kg women’s event at the 2021 World Wrestling Championships in Oslo. Meanwhile, Pooja Jatt will aim to win the repechage round and get a little closer to the bronze medal in the women’s 53kg event.
Pinki was toppled in the semifinal by virtue of a narrow loss, but was also looking to hit her best shot in the bronze medal fight on Tuesday. However, it did not turn as expected. Jenna Burkert of the USA used her top leg attacks to perfection and recorded a 5-2 win over her Indian opponent to claim a podium.
Meanwhile, India’s Pooja Jatt, who was eliminated in the first round, was given a new lease of life, with her opponent Akari Fujinami of Japan coming into the fight for the gold medal of the 53kg women’s event. Pooja will have to defeat Luisa Melendres of Ecuador in the playoff round to set a date with Poland’s Katarzyna Krawczyk for the bronze medal.
Also in the same boat is Kiran Bishnoi, in the women’s 76kg category. The 29-year-old won her opening fight against South Korea’s Cholee Kim 6-0, but lost 0-5 to American Adeline Maria Gray in the quarterfinals. With his opponent reaching the final, he has been given a chance to win the bronze medal. She will face Aysegul Ozbege of Turkey in the repechage round, with Samar Hamza awaiting the bronze medal fight.
Hanny Kumari of India crashed in the women’s 50kg event after suffering a 0-10 loss by technical superiority to Nadezhda Sokolova of the Russian Wrestling Federation in the quarterfinals. In addition, in the women’s 65kg category, India Bhateri was outscored 0-8 by Dinara Salikhova of the Russian Wrestling Federation.
