WWE SmackDown Preview (January 14, 2022): The roster is one big mess

Slap airs tonight (January 14) with a live show from the Chi Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska. this is the second Slap episode during construction four weeks ago royal rumble on January 29.

The SmackDown roster is a huge mess

The Slap The roster is in shambles right now due to a combination of injuries, poor bookings and pitching.

Drew McIntyre, Sasha Banks, King Woods and Shinsuke Nakamura are out with injuries. These four fighters are among the strongest booked characters on the show, outside of The Bloodline, which leaves the Slap list with no viable or interesting contenders for most titles.

There is no viable threat to universal champion Roman Reigns on the roster. Sheamus, Kofi Kingston and Happy Corbin are the top three Slap fighters available to take on the Tribal Chief, but anyone who has been paying attention to the show knows that none of them stand a chance against the Table Chief. Instead of taking one of them up to the main event level with Roman, WWE made the smart decision to bring in Seth Rollins from Raw.

Seth will challenge Reigns for the title at royal rumble. There’s a lot of history between these two men going back to their Shield days, and Seth at least has a chance to win the match. Rollins is expected to appear in Slap tonight, where he will surely remind us all how successful he has been against Roman in singles competition.

Moving on to the tag team division, The Usos are the Slap couples champions, and left New Day for good last week. the first three Slap Teams available to promote to champions now include Happy Corbin & Madcap Moss, Los Lotharios, and Viking Raiders. The problem with this group of teams is that the heel matchups (Corbin/Moss, Lotharios) are not interesting for TV vs. the Usos, while the babyface team (Viking Raiders) just worked Corbin and Moss last week. .

Injuries to Woods, Nakamura and Ridge Holland take other teams out of the mix. Hit Row is also unavailable, because WWE released the entire faction shortly after last October’s draft.

Looking further down the list, WWE can certainly fix something. There are interesting fighters floating around, like Ricochet, Mansoor, Mustafa Ali and Cesaro. The problem, of course, is that they have all been searched on the ground. Ricochet and Cesaro in particular just lost what was effectively a handicap match against Sheamus at Day 1. Mansoor and Mustafa Ali rarely appear on television. All of these babyfaces are a bunch of losers, including the Viking Raiders, and it’s a problem that is now affecting WWE.

The women’s division is not doing much better. Charlotte Flair is the Slap female champion. The Slap Fighters available to challenge her include Naomi, Xia Li, Aliyah, Natalya, Shotzi, and Shayna Baszler. Li has already disappeared from television after making her debut last month. Charlotte beat Naomi last week. Shayna Baszler is an ineffective minion for Sonya Deville, she hasn’t won a televised match in over two months and hasn’t really sniffed singles gold since. WrestleMania 36 in 2020. Aliyah never gets any TV time. Shotzi and Natalya are mid-card heels and don’t mix well against a heel champion.

The situation is bad enough that Flair had to insert herself into the Women’s Royal Rumble, even though she is the champion and there really is no point in her being in that match. As with Rollins, this was probably the best decision WWE could have made given the disappointing state of the division; It is very credible that Flair wants to dominate the field and choose his own wrestling adversary. Flair still needs things to do in Slap television, however, and it’s unclear how she’ll spend the time given that she’s surrounded by a roster that isn’t up to her level.

The conclusion is that the Slap The roster is a huge mess right now, and it will take more than just an appearance by Seth Rollins on tonight’s episode to fix many of these glaring issues.

Other things to consider

– Brock Lesnar is not announced for tonight’s episode of Slap. It looks like Seth, Roman and Shanky will have to carry the load.

– Sami Zayn is the number one contender to Nakamura’s. intercontinental title. Nakamura is dealing with a hand injury, which is why Zayn spent the past week working for Rick Boogs and getting kicked out of the ring by Johnny Knoxville. That’s not exactly the best way to get fans excited for a future championship match between Zayn and Nakamura. But Zayn is basically a comedy guy, so he exists to make a fool out of him.

– Sonya Deville continued to play with Naomi last week, this time screwing her over in a match against Flair. The story between Sonya and Naomi started out hot but has been dragging on for a while.

– Sheamus has declared for the Royal Rumble match. There are plenty of baby-faced jabronis on the roster who can eat your Brogue kicks as you get ready for the big match.

– Will Xia Li ever fight on TV? His main roster debut should be against Natalya, if WWE decides he’s worth putting on television.
